No, a retractor is not necessary to use the SCORKL but you may find it helpful if you wish to secure your SCORKL or an extra SCORKL to yourself as you dive. 

The SCORKL Retractor is made of high-tensile nylon, extending 32 inches (80 centimetres) in length. It attaches to 2 inch (4 centimetre) dive belts and loops easily over the neck of your SCORKL or SCORKL PRO.
